Merchant 1948

New Zealand has a proud legacy of family owned business; the Anselmi family opened their first store in 1948 and have been selling footwear to New Zealanders ever since. Their first Christchurch Overland store opened in 1997, and ever since then the city has been special to the beloved footwear brand – now known as Merchant 1948. When their original Cashel Street store closed in the wake of the earthquakes, it was never going to be forever.

Knowing the importance of bringing business and people back to the heart of Christchurch, they seized the opportunity to join an innovative new retail centre and share their new name and look. The opening of the new Merchant 1948 store has fateful timing – coinciding with the twenty year anniversary of first joining the city’s retail landscape.

The sleek new store features their men’s and women’s range – fashion forward styles, premium leather footwear, sneakers, leathergoods and more – all sourced from around the globe in order to bring the best product back home to loyal, local customers. It’s a welcome return to central Christchurch.
